1999 SASS Hand Launch Glider Contests

Well, the results are in, and the SASS HLG season has come to an end!  Its
been a great season with a bunch of old and new faces showing up at the
field throughout the season.  We had a great year without a SINGLE rainout!
In fact, I can't even remember too bad of a mid-air.  Pretty good for a
bunch of sand-baggers.

The Gang, Back L to R, Bruce Kimball, Tim Johnson, Wayne Farwell, Loren Anstead
Front L to R: Jonathan, Mark Bryan, Red Weston, Tim Naugler, Phil Pearson, and Dick Barker

On the Sportsperson side, it was a good year for the Bryans (father Jonathan
and son Mark) They pretty much swept the contests they flew with they're
armament of sidearm launched planes.  Close on they're heels and winner of
the July contest was Tim Johnson.  Tim remarked to me at the last contest,
that it was exactly a year ago that he first saw competition HLG, and he
knew he had to do it!  Now he's building his own foam and fiberglass planes
and really reading lift well.  Its great to see all the Sportspeople out
there learning and competing.

The Experts had some good battles, with 4 different winners out of the five contests!
Old hands Joseph Conrad and Phil Pearson each won one, and the oldest hand, Dick
Barker showed us all how to do it in July.  However, it was yours truly who put it all
together, especially the LUCK part, to win two contests, and ultimately the season
championship.  However, Its encouraging to know, the Sportsperson category was
only 600 seconds (that's one round out of 34) behind the Experts!  There'll be LOTS
of fun next year!

I want to thank our sponsors for the season, DJ Aerotech (www.bright.net/~djwerks) and
Thermal-Gromit Works (www.tgworks.com) for donating HLG door prizes throughout the
season.  I also want to thank the Seattle Area Soaring Society
for they're help in maintaining and retaining the field, and dealing with all the politics it
takes to have a glider club in a metropolitan area.
