Contest Results

With warm temperatures, light winds and clear blue sky full of wood sailplanes, soaring conditions on Saturday June 19th were fantastic for our first Wood Wings contest.

Eleven pilots in three classes launched continuously for 4 ˝ hours attempting to complete as many flights as possible toward the 2-minute ladder task and the longest flight of the day. We also had a few new pilots show up for their first contest including John Richards from Maple Valley and the father / son team of Connor & Jim Laurel.

Scored landings were optional but allowed all pilots to accumulate raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes at the end of the contest. Lift was plentiful throughout the day with several pilots racking up well over an hour of total airtime and plenty of sore neck muscles by the end of the flying at 2:30PM.

At the end of the contest we wrapped up with award plaques for 1st through 3rd place in each class. Pilots who placed in each class were able to choose from among the 19 prizes donated by our generous sponsors and the remaining prizes were raffled off.

Loren Steel completed longest flight of the day with a time of 39 minutes and 5 seconds to win the coveted swivel-base pilots chair made and generously donated by SASS member Larry Winter. Contact Larry at XspamXlar.winter@verizon.net if you’re interested in purchasing one of these chairs – they’re great for long flights on summer days.

Thanks to every one who helped to keep the contest running, including our winch master Dave Brombaugh and Field Marshall Pete Hinze for providing the trailer and invaluable assistance with setup and tear down.

Our sponsors also deserve a big thanks for their prize donations. Let them know you heard about them at the contest.

We hope to make Wood Wings an annual event so start planning your building projects now. Rumor has it that Adam Weston has an Allegro on his building board that just might be finished in time for next year.
