Camp Korey is open for business...Sailplane business that is! There will be more articles in the weeks to come, including pictures and public dates. Reminder to the membership, this field is only open to paid members that have completed a background check. See the rules for more information. Below is the press release being distributed by SASS. MODEL SOARING SOCIETY OPENS NEW FLYING FIELDThe Seattle Area Soaring Society, an organization of radio control sailplane enthusiasts, announced this week that they will be opening a new flying field in the Snoqualmie Valley, northwest of the town of Carnation. The field, located on the grounds of Camp Korey, site of the old Carnation Farm, is being established in conjunction with Camp Korey and King County. The Soaring Society (SASS) has signed an initial 15 year lease with Camp Korey for the flying of model sailplanes only, which should well match the excellent thermal (updraft) activity that has been observed at the site. SASS and its members have been flying at 60 Acres South, a King County public park, for over 30 years, and will continue to do so every Wednesday throughout the model glider flying season, which runs from late Spring until early Fall. SASS will also host three weekend model soaring events at 60 Acres South during the summer, along with occasional drop in use, when the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association, which recently signed a long term lease with King County to administer the park, is not utilizing it. The Seattle Area Soaring Society is proud to be associated with Camp Korey, a non-profit charity organization offering medically supervised activities for children with serious and life threatening illnesses. The Soaring Society is planning to invest $50,000.00 in new equipment and improvements to the site. Membership in SASS, along with a license from the Academy of Model Aeronautics, will be required of all those who wish to fly at the Camp Korey site. Information about joining the club may be found on their website, seattleareasoaringsociety.com. SASS is planning a grand opening celebration at the new Camp Korey site in early summer of 2009. |
