Discovery Park
Discovery Park is a wonderful urban slope soaring site. It works with Southwest winds. Sailplanes are welcome in the park, but be aware that it is frowned upon to venture down the cliffs to retrieve your plane. Don't throw off unless you're sure there is lift. This slope is not for beginners unless you are accompanied by an experienced slope pilot.
Watch out at all times for the many walkers that stroll by, particularly when landing.
Park on W. Emerson Street, but be aware of the no-parking zones. If you park in one of the nearby neighborhoods, obey all signs.
Enter the park through the gate on Emerson. As you walk a couple hundred feet through the gate heading North, you will see the flying site in the distance on your left. It's maybe a quarter mile walk.
Follow the several trails to the sand dunes on the bluff. If you take the very left most trail, there is a public restroom and a drinking fountain. When you get to the sand dune area, there is a small sign that describes the bluff area. This is typically where we fly. There is no formal frequency control at Discovery Park, so don't turn on until you reach the sand dune area.
Here is a link to a weather buoy that give Discovery Park winds...it's a very reliable source of information before you head out..
