Club Open House at Camp Korey PDF Print E-mail

On June 13th, 2009 SASS introduced Camp Korey as our new club field.  I feel I can speak for our members when I say that the field is stunning.  I showed up a little late to the gathering and didn't have the gate code to get in, so I left the ladCK Logoy in the car while I walked up to the out buildings and parking lot where everyone was gathering.  That experience alone was enough to fall head over heals in love with our new home.  It's a 1/4 mile or so saunter up a single lane concrete road, lined on either side by large disiduous trees.  On the left is the primary flying field, 100+ acres of shin high grass narry a tree in sight.  To the right, another equally large field that at the moment is marked an un-flyable area until we settle in.  As you approach the parking area, out buildings and farm managers home you will get the sence that as this is our new home we do share the property with the farmers that live there.  All members would be good to keep this in mind every time we make our way up the drive.

Camp Korey is open for business...Sailplane business that is!  There will be more articles in the weeks to come, including pictures and public dates.  Reminder to the membership, this field is only open to paid members that have completed a background check.  See the rules for more information.  Below is the press release being distributed by SASS.

MODEL SOARING SOCIETY OPENS NEW FLYING FIELD

The Seattle Area Soaring Society, an organization of radio control sailplane enthusiasts, announced this week that they will be opening a new flying field in the Snoqualmie Valley, northwest of the town of Carnation.  The field, located on the grounds of Camp Korey, site of the old Carnation Farm, is being established in conjunction with Camp Korey and King County.  The Soaring Society (SASS) has signed an initial 15 year lease with Camp Korey for the flying of model sailplanes only, which should well match the excellent thermal (updraft) activity that has been observed at the site.

We had a great contest on Saturday the 30th of May. We had 25 pilots show up - including some non-club members from around the NWSS. We had 2 novice pilots visiting from SRAC who did very well with the help of Roy Stubbs.Group Photo

After the usual crew slaving away with setup, we called a quick pilots meeting to get things started…. Only this time, the pilots meeting was a little different. I started by sharing my views on what club contest event are all about

·         Participating in a club event

·         Hanging out with friends

·         Having fun

·         An – most importantly, IMO, taking the club contest, as an opportunity to become a better pilot.

A beautiful day greeted the contestants at the first SASS contest of the year.  60-Acres was about the best I've ever seen it in April, and what a wonderful treat to have the entire field mowed down all the way to the East parking lot.  Ends up the wet lands weren't any wetter than the rest of the field (who knew?).
